My Priorities

PRIORITIZING CAPITAL & FACILITY IMPROVEMENTS

Expedite the construction of much needed facilities for our students’ safety and equip them for 21st century learning. Several schools still depend on “temporary” trailers for the classes. A construction plan needs to be developed with expedited implementation to replace trailers and update other facilities to meet present- day needs.

ADDRESS THE DROP IN TEST SCORES

Examine reasons for why Fairfax County Student’s SAT scores have dropped despite significant investment. Fairfax County schools SAT scores have declined by 27% over the last five years.   This is unheard of.  In other counties around the DMV, the SAT scores have improved. For example, The Montgomery Count SAT scores have increased by 13%;  A review needs to be made to determine the issue behind this decline in FCPS

ENHANCE SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS

Enhance the implementation of Fairfax County Public School policies/programs for special education needs.   Currently, the policies and programs for special education are interpreted and implemented at only certain schools. The policies should be reviewed and implemented where all schools have access to viable special education programs.  As these programs are implemented, steps should be taken to ensure that teachers and administrators have the training and tools to ensure effective special education programs.

EXPAND ADVANCED EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES

Expand advanced education opportunities for all Fairfax County Public Schools. Students attending all schools should have the opportunity at school expense to enroll in community college courses.  Currently, not all schools provide this tuition-free opportunity, requiring parents to pay for the courses at several schools. Opportunities for extracurricular programs should also be expanded to include county-wide attendance, regardless of what school the student attends.
